How to Apply for an Emergency Passport
Czech citizens who have lost their travel document (ID Card or Passport) in Malta are able to apply for an Emergency Passport at the Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Malta. This facility is only available for Czech citizens. Of course, if you have lost just one of your documents, passport or ID Card, and the other is available to you, you are able to travel back to the Czech Republic or to any other Schengen country, using that document.
The Emergency Passport can only be used for travel back to the Czech Republic and is for one-time use. People flying via another airport in transit on the same journey can use this emergency travel document.
In the event that the Honorary Consul is not available to issue the Emergency Passport, a procedure exists at any EU Embassy to obtain an EU Emergency travel Document.
PROCEDURE
You will need to undertake the following steps:
Report your lost Czech passport and/or ID card to a local Malta police station or on-line and keep the report.
Fill in the Emergency Passport application form. This can be filled on-line without printing and can be saved as a PDF. Do not sign the form as this needs to be signed physically in the presence of the Honorary Consul.
If you have a photo or scan of your ID Card or Passport, or ideally both, send this/these immediately to the Honorary Consulate by e-mail on info@czechconsulatemalta.org
If you have also lost your Czech ID Card, please follow the Lost Czech ID Card procedure.
Once received by the Honorary Consulate, these documents will then be forwarded by the Honorary Consulate to the Embassy in Rome for verification and authorisation of the Honorary Consul to issue the passport. Emergency Passports cannot be issued without authorisation for the Embassy.
Once this authorisation has been received, you will be contacted to be given an appointment to visit the Honorary Consulate
Bring to your appointment
your documents to be used for authentication (copy of ID Card or passport),
two passport sized photos (see list of passport photo locations),
the filled but unsigned application form,
the Police report
the payment due.
A fee is applicable as per the published rate issued by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs which currently is EUR 32.00. Payment by credit card is not available but an ATM is available just outside the Honorary Consulate.
Emergency Passports can only be issued personally by the Honorary Consul. In the event that the Honorary Consul is not available, Czech citizens, and in fact all EU citizens can refer to any Embassy in Malta of another EU State, who will be able to provide you with a emergency travel document.
