Getting Married in Malta
The entity of the Maltese Government which deals with citizenship and processing of civil marriages is called Identità.
Follow this link to their website to understand the requirements for Celebrating a Marriage in Malta for EU and non-EU citizens living abroad.
Post-Ceremony
For foreign recognition:
EU countries generally accept the English-language certificate without an apostille. Please check with your own registration authorities.
Non-EU countries might require legalisation via apostille.
Register your marriage according to your home country’s rules.
Tips
While you’re not required to live in Malta beforehand, it’s recommended to arrive at least 2 working days before the ceremony for the final registry meeting and to handle any last-minute issues .
The process spans roughly 2–3 months from your first appointment to the ceremony, requiring careful preparation of forms and documents, managing deadlines, and navigating legal formalities. But once in Malta, the ceremony is smoothly handled by the Registry.
